Better Than New Year’s Resolutions

Just about every one of us has started a diet, tried to quit smoking, joined a gym or set some kind of intention to change on January 1st, only to find ourselves right back in our old habits before the month is over.

It’s such common knowledge that New Year’s resolutions don’t work, that it’s become a joke in our society!

But it’s not that any one of us is lazy, undisciplined or flawed in some way.

It’s that the entire premise of resolutions is totally out of whack.

So let’s unpack exactly why that is.

First, we’ll take a look at the top 3 reasons why New Year’s resolutions don’t work, then I’ll give you the 3 keys that are absolutely necessary to achieve your goals in 2022.

3 Reasons Resolutions Aren’t Getting You to Your Goals

#1 They’re Uninspired

Have you ever noticed that when you make a resolution you're basically judging yourself for not being healthy enough, thin enough, rich enough or how you “should” be? It’s not very nice, it doesn’t feel great and it’s all about what we lack instead of what we love.

#2 They’re Based on Willpower

WIllpower is not something that is meant to be sustained over time. It’s only meant to be used in short bursts, so when we rely on it over a period of time, we’re setting ourselves up to fail.

#3 They’re Unspecific

A lot of resolutions go something like this: “I’m going to workout everyday in 2022.” So when you miss a day, you already feel like you failed, and you don’t have a plan to get back on track.

3 Keys to Reach Your Goals in The New Year

#1 Vision

You will only be motivated to get out of bed and work toward your goals every day if you’re in LOVE with them. So you need a clear vision that lights you up inside if you want to create real, lasting change.

#2 Support

No dream is achieved alone. We all need a mentor, a coach, a group or a team. In fact, in his book “Change or Die” Alan Deutschman reveals that even when faced with life-threatening illness, 85% of people will return to their old eating and exercise habits within 2 weeks of receiving their diagnosis when they do not have a support system in place.

#3 Structure

Energy loves structure. If you run water through a pipe, it has great force. But if you just disperse it across a field, it loses its power. Without structure, things tend to fall apart or fizzle out. When we create structure for our goals, such as using a calendar, having a system of accountability, making appointments and agreements, and having vision-driven daily practices, we create an environment for success to flow.

There is a gravitational pull to our habits and what is familiar, and in order to change, we need all three of these keys working together.

So if you’ve been struggling, disappointed in your results or thought things would look different by now, I totally understand. I’ve been there, too.

I would love to help you with the vision, support and structure you’ll need to turn things around and create a life you love (and deserve) in the new year.
